The state-prosecuted charges against Mariyam Dheena, former Head of Procurement at Fenaka Corporation, have been proven, and she has been remanded in custody until the conclusion of the trial and the delivery of her sentence.
Dheena is being prosecuted over the issue of releasing payments to Blazen Ink under an agreement made between Fenaka and Blazen Ink in 2009 [2019], before the company had completed the work and without verifying that the work had been completed.
The determination that the charges are proven was made during a hearing held yesterday at the Criminal Court.
The presiding judge ruled that, taking into account the evidence presented by the state against Dheena, the charge of abuse of official capacity has been proven.
Following this ruling, the state requested that she be remanded until sentencing. Consequently, the judge decided to keep Dheena in detention until the verdict in the case was delivered.
Upon this decision, Dheena wept for a long time in the courtroom.
The basic sentence for this offense is one year, seven months, and six days of imprisonment.
A four-year prison sentence was previously handed down about a year ago against Mohamed Saeed, the former MD of Fenaka, who was co-accused in this case.
Although the court attempted to deliver the sentence against Dheena alongside Saeed, it could not be done at the time because she was admitted to the hospital. Even after that, Dheena continued to notify the court that she could not attend with numerous documents regarding her medical condition.
In addition to this, another trial against Dheena is ongoing in the Criminal Court. This involves charges alleging that the awarding of the establishment of camera systems across all Fenaka branches, along with a command center and video conference system at the head office, to Cairetsu Private Limited in June 2018 was done in a manner that facilitated corruption.
