Two parking buildings in Male' are expected to be completed before November next year, Transport Minister Mohamed Saeed said today.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, Saeed said President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had decided to construct one building at the Heenaamaage parking lot and another on vacant land next to the Maldives National University’s Business School on Sosun Magu.
He said discussions with the contractor were in their final stages, with work expected to be handed over soon.
“The target for both buildings, which will be handed over to the contractor soon, is to be completed before November next year,” Saeed said.
The Minister said the projects were intended to ease parking difficulties in Male', where the shortage of parking spaces has become a persistent concern.
President Muizzu announced plans to build the two parking buildings in Male' during an episode of The Pulse podcast last July. He said the projects had been delayed while the government sought financing from abroad but stressed that he had no intention of postponing them.
Meanwhile, Batch Construction was awarded a contract last March to build four parking buildings in Hulhumale'.
The company plans to construct a 13-storey parking building in Hulhumale' Phase 1, with capacity for more than 500 two-wheelers and over 800 four-wheelers.
The project is expected to be completed within two years. The company has said the building will also include commercial spaces, with priority given to traffic flow.
