The Proceeds of Crime Bill allows assets acquired through criminal activity to be confiscated in special circumstances, including when an accused person dies before trial or absconds, MP Ali Fazad said today.

Speaking during the final debate on the bill in parliament, Fuvahmulah Central MP Fazad, who submitted the bill on behalf of the government, said it provided for asset confiscation in three circumstances.

In each case, the Prosecutor General must apply to the High Court and obtain an order before the property can be confiscated, he said.

Section 74 of the bill sets out the circumstances in which assets acquired through crime can be confiscated, MP Fazad said.

The proposed law [bill] aims to prevent people convicted of serious crimes from benefiting financially from their offences. It also establishes procedures for confiscating such assets and preventing further profits from criminal activity.
