The opportunity to contest positions in the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) National Council elections opened today, with applications due by 2pm on 25 October.
The largest opposition party said in an announcement that registered members can apply for the positions through its Yellow app. Candidates must pay an administrative fee of MVR1,000.
The positions open for election include:
- National Council members representing atolls, cities, islands and city constituencies
- Vice-presidents, secretaries, women’s secretaries and youth secretaries of island and city constituencies
- President of the MDP Women’s Wing and five National Council members elected by the wing
- President of the MDP Youth Wing and five National Council members elected by the wing
MDP’s National Council term has expired, and elections are scheduled for 27 November.
Some candidates have already begun campaigning.
The party’s congress, held earlier this month, approved a new general regulation that includes major changes to the composition of the National Council.
