First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has called for greater attention to the mental health of senior citizens, saying the future of healthcare in the Maldives should prioritise their mental wellbeing.
She made the remarks today at a ceremony in Kaafu atoll Kaashidhoo, marking World Mental Health Day and launching the programme to raise awareness of mental health among senior citizens at the Israhvehinge Sahlla.
First Lady Sajidha said mental health was important for everyone, but added that particular attention should be given to older people, who she described as among the most respected members of society.
She said the programme would encourage senior citizens to learn more about mental health, discuss their concerns and seek help when needed.
“We want to see a Maldives where senior citizens are happy and smiling. Hopefully, the future of the health sector in Maldives is moving towards that goal,” she said.
The First Lady said the government had established various centres for senior citizens in recent years, where they continued to take part in activities and spend time together.
She said the activities could have a positive impact on the mental health of older people experiencing loneliness.
First Lady Sajidha said the awareness meeting in Kaashidhoo marked another step towards creating more opportunities to support the wellbeing of senior citizens.
