Police have revealed that Maahu Hassan, arrested in relation to the September 20 accident on Sosun Magu, had been intoxicated at the time of the crash.
Maahu Hassan, Th. Dhiyamigili, whose dangerous driving is believed to have caused the accident, was initially remanded for 15 days. The 21-year old was presented in Criminal Court at the end of the remand period, where his detention was extended until the end of trial today.
As per the remand order, police are now accusing Maahu of causing death through negligence.
At the remand hearing, Police said that Maahu had been under the influence of narcotics at the time of the accident. Maahu also did not possess a drivers' license.
As per the first remand order, the accident was caused due to Maahu driving his motorcycle at a fast speed, in a zig-zag route through traffic on Sosun Magu when he crashed into another motorcycle passing by.
The passenger on the motorcycle he crashed into, a 26-year old woman, suffered critical brain injuries and was initially treated at ADK Hospital.
The woman, Aishath Maahidha, of Magumatheege, Sh. Foakaidhoo, later lost her life on September 25 while under treatment in hospital.
Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusan also recently shared that cases of persons driving under influence have been on the rise.
As per the newly enforce Land Transport Act, penalties for dangerous and reckless driving are fines between MVR 25,000 and MVR 100,000, based on the severity of the offence.
As per the Act, if such an action causes injury, the fines will be between MVR 100,000 and MVR 500,000.
Further, criminal charges can also be brought against the offender in addition to the traffic fines.
While Maahu does not possess a driving license, he has been stopped and fined four times previously even within the year.
