The suspect arrested in relation to the fatal accident on Sosun Magu on September 20 has been placed in remand in custody until the end of trial. 

Maahu Hassan, Th. Dhiyamigili, whose dangerous driving is believed to have caused the accident, was initially remanded for 15 days. The 21-year old was presented in Criminal Court at the end of the remand period, where his detention was extended until the end of trial today. 

As per the first remand order, the accident was caused due to Maahu driving his motorcycle at a fast speed, in a zig-zag route through traffic on Sosun Magu when he crashed into another motorcycle passing by. Maahu also does not possess a driving license.

The passenger on the motorcycle he crashed into, a 26-year old woman, suffered critical brain injuries and was initially treated at ADK Hospital. 

The woman, Aishath Maahidha, of Magumatheege, Sh. Foakaidhoo, later lost her life on September 25 while under treatment in hospital.

When arrested, Maahu claimed that he, too, had suffered injuries in the accident and appealed for leniency in remand. He had also then declined legal representation. 

Judge Ibrahim Zihuny advised Maahu that statements made without legal representation can be used against him, and reminded him of his right to remain silent. 

As per the newly enforce Land Transport Act, penalties for dangerous and reckless driving are fines between MVR 25,000 and MVR 100,000, based on the severity of the offence. 

As per the Act, if such an action causes injury, the fines will be between MVR 100,000 and MVR 500,000. 

Further, criminal charges can also be brought against the offender in addition to the traffic fines. 

While Maahu does not possess a driving license, he has been stopped and fined four times previously even within the year.
