The agreement was signed by Male' Mayor Adam Azim and Thinadhoo Mayor Saudh Ali at a ceremony held at the Male' City Council offices.
Speaking at the ceremony, Azim said that the MoU includes multiple areas of collaboration between the cities including joint staff development initiatives for staff at both councils, and facilitating business expansion between the two cities.
Azim stated that the MoU covers a wide area of possible collaboration, and added that he hopes to enter similar agreements with several other cities and councils and work towards further strengthening the decentralization system.
The MoU also covers resource sharing between councils, which will expand the role of decentralization in the country's development trajectory, Azim said.
"Some applications we develop under technology will be shared with each other. There are some very important things. What we develop will be shared with city councils and island councils without any cost. And, I hope, in the same way, we will get access to what they have," Azim said.
