It has been learned that Mohamed Visham, who was arrested in Thailand with a large quantity of drugs, is the same individual who was arrested on suspicion of being connected to the 72 kilograms of drugs seized by Maldivian police in a major operation conducted six years ago.
While two Maldivians were arrested with a large quantity of drugs in a special operation conducted by the Capital Metropolitan Police Division in the Thai capital of Bangkok, it has been revealed that one of them is Mohamed Visham, Alaska, R. Inguraidhoo.
Visham was one of the individuals whom police suspected to be at the forefront of the 72 kg drug case seized while being smuggled into the Maldives by sea in December 2020 aboard a boat named "Masjaree-2."
In that case, charges were raised against 10 people, including him. However, the state later withdrew the other cases, save for the charges against three individuals. The charges raised against Visham were also among those withdrawn.
The charges previously raised against Visham were withdrawn because, according to the state, it was believed there was insufficient evidence to prove the crime against them given the current state of rulings by higher-stage courts.
While the state proceeded with the charges of three individuals, those included Irfan Thaqiyyu, Deeliyaage, S. Hithadhoo, who was also suspected of being a major figure alongside Visham. The charges proceeded against Ahmed Naseer, Anbugasdhoshuge, Dh. Maanebdhoo, and Mohamed Akram, Gardenbeauty, H. were also continued. However, the Criminal Court determined that the charges against those individuals were not proven.
Police had also previously suspected that a person was sent to Pakistan as a guarantee that payment would be made to those who supplied the drugs imported by these individuals, keeping a person under the custody of the drug network. That was a person named Mohamed Misbah, whose disappearance was announced for search in June 2021.
Visham, who was arrested in such a major case but escaped it, was arrested in Thailand following a special operation conducted after a cargo office in Bangkok's Pratunam area reported to the police that parcels sent by them might contain drugs.
Since a foul odor was emanating from those parcels, the cargo office did not accept those items, so the men took them and kept them in the room in the Sukhumvit area where Visham and the others were staying. Reports stated that when police searched that room and the parcels, a total of 2.37 kilograms of crystal meth (ice) and approximately 10 kilograms of cannabis were seized.
Newspapers also stated that those drugs were hidden inside thermoses and children's clothing.
As Thai police made the photos of that operation public, they stated that these Maldivians were individuals operating a major drug network in connection with a group. However, police stated that they denied the accusations leveled against them during the investigation.
