The Ministry of Fisheries has opened the opportunity to apply for this year's Keyolhu Award, allowing nominations for female fishermen as well.
In an announcement made by the ministry today, it stated that awards have been decided to be presented in four categories at the ceremony held to celebrate this year's Fishermen's Day. Unlike other years, this year's award has also included female Keyolhus (skippers).
Those who can apply for the awards are:
- The most dedicated young Keyolhu (under 35 years of age) who is currently actively engaged in fishing and does not do any other work to earn an income besides fishing.
- The most experienced Keyolhu (above 35 years of age) who is currently actively engaged in fishing and does not do any other work to earn an income besides fishing.
- The dedicated reef fisherman award for the most dedicated reef fisherman whose main income-generating work is reef fishing.
- The dedicated female fisherman award for a female fisherman who is actively engaged in fishing and fishes to earn an income.
The ministry has requested those wishing to apply for any of these awards to submit their completed forms before 2:00 PM on the 29th of October.
The ministry also stated that forms prepared to apply for these awards can be downloaded from the ministry's website, www.fishagriocean.gov.mv.
Nominations for these awards can be submitted in an individual capacity or on behalf of someone else.
Fishermen's Day is celebrated in the Maldives on the 10th of December every year.
