Five people were injured in a collision between two motorcycles in Hulhumale' early this morning, with three of those involved riding a stolen motorcycle, police said.
The accident occurred at around 3:00 am on Nirolhu Magu. The injured were initially treated at Hulhumale' Hospital before being transferred to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for further treatment.
Two of the injured are being treated in the operating theatre, while the other three are in the emergency room, a hospital official said.
Police said the rider of the stolen motorcycle did not have a driving licence and had been riding on a one-way road. The rider also has about MVR100,000 in outstanding fines for traffic violations, police said.
A source told Mihaaru News that the accident occurred while the motorcycle was being driven dangerously against traffic on the bridge highway and within Hulhumale'.
The stolen motorcycle was being ridden by two men and a woman.
The rider has been arrested several times in connection with various offences, including alleged fraud and theft.
