Montilian International Private Limited, a company with family interests linked to former Vice-President Ahmed Adeeb and which was used to conduct dollar transactions in the MMPRC corruption scandal, has been sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office for prosecution on money laundering charges.
According to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), investigations conducted by the ACC and police revealed that a large amount of funds from the MMPRC embezzlement was deposited into Montilian's account through Adeeb via two checks from a dollar account opened at the Bank of Maldives under the name of SOF Private Limited.
The ACC also stated that these funds were deposited into Montilian's account and utilized even though there were circumstances in which the key individuals managing Montilian at the time could have suspected that the money was obtained through criminal activities.
Therefore, along with pursuing money laundering charges against Montilian, the commission has decided to instruct MMPRC to recover the 150,000 dollars deposited to Montilian through the two SOF checks.
The company is currently in the process of liquidation.
The MMPRC corruption scandal, one of the largest corruption cases in the Maldives, involved the embezzlement of more than MVR1 billion. The three companies facing the most serious allegations in the case are SOF, Millennial Capital and Montilian International.
Efforts are under way to recover funds owed in connection with dollar transactions involving the three companies. Courts have also issued rulings ordering all three companies to repay the funds.
SOF is a company belonging to M. Cessna Allam Mohamed Latheef (Moho), a close associate of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb. Millennial Capital is a company belonging to Adeeb's uncle Hamid Ismail. Montilian International is a company with shares held by Adeeb's family members.
