A man has been arrested for allegedly driving dangerously while intoxicated, attempting to flee from police and crashing into a police vehicle.
Ahmed Fariz, 26, Snowsky, Kaafu Atoll Maafushi, was arrested early Sunday morning on suspicion of driving dangerously while under the influence of alcohol in a manner that caused fear among the public.
He was also arrested for allegedly attempting to flee after police ordered him to stop and crashing into a police vehicle.
Fariz was produced before court for a remand decision and was ordered to remain in custody for seven days.
Police said they received a report that a man without a helmet was lying on his motorcycle and driving dangerously on the road. Officers identified Fariz and instructed him to stop at a traffic light.
According to police, officers followed Fariz and repeatedly instructed him to stop, but he refused and attempted to flee. The police vehicle was damaged in the ensuing incident, police said.
Fariz then abandoned his motorcycle and fled the scene, according to police.
He was later stopped and arrested by police officers patrolling Male', on Moonlight Hingun.
Police said Fariz had repeatedly violated traffic laws and regulations and had an outstanding traffic fine of MVR44,000.
His previous traffic offences include driving without a licence, driving on one-way roads, speeding, driving without mirrors, repeatedly driving while his licence was suspended, dangerous driving and driving with modified lights.
