Maldives Media and Broadcasting Corporation (MMBC) has appealed to the media to avoid topics that could incite discord.
In a statement marking National Broadcasting Day, MMBC urged all broadcasters to refrain from spreading false information and covering topics that could create unrest, while prioritizing national interests and disseminating news and information responsibly.
The statement reads that MMBC will continue their ongoing efforts to develop the broadcasting industry and to protect the rights of industry workers.
MMBC said that the broadcasting service is one of the most important resources in increasing a nation's social, political and economic awareness and in providing the correct information to the public. The commission said that they speak specifically about the valuable national service "Male' Radio" which was introduced in 29th December 1962 by broadcasters in providing Islamic conduct, Maldivian nationality, maintaining culture, and providing valid and correct information to the community.
The statement reads:
- When looking at Maldives' broadcasting history, Male' Radio had its name changed to Seneco Radio, Maldives Island Broadcasting Service (MIBC) in 1967, Radio Maldives in 1969 and then to Voice of Maldives in 1980.
- Television Maldives was formed in 1978, with broadcasting to private companies being introduced in 2007.
- A legal framework was established for broadcasters when the Broadcasting Act came into force in 2010 during that historic period.
- Under the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act that came into force on 18th September 2025, the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Corporation (MMBC) was formed, with the broadcasting sector and modern media coming together for a new age.
"As we are celebrating National Broadcasting Day, we would like to highlight the 37 broadcasters and 29 rebroadcasters who have been serving Maldives to this day," reads MMBC's statement.
MMBC went on to say that in terms of technology and the changes to the media industry, the commission assured their continued efforts in advancing the broadcasting sector and providing quality services with modern resources.
MMBC also said that with professional training for industry workers and their capabilities being improved, it is one of their main aims to encourage the establishment of a journalistic and broadcasting environment that is independent and responsible within the framework of laws and regulations.
