Police to identify and investigate reckless drivers

The police announced today that they will publicize the identities of individuals who repeatedly drive vehicles recklessly on the roads in a manner that instills fear in the public, and will launch criminal investigations against them without further warning.

In a statement issued by Police Service, it was stated that special efforts have been commenced to stop individuals who repeatedly drive vehicles recklessly on the roads causing public fear, and to take strict action against them.

The police stated that as part of this effort, work is underway to identify those who drive vehicles dangerously and profile their information.

According to the police, after summoning such individuals and admonishing them, criminal investigations will be conducted against those who repeat these actions, without further warning, in addition to the fines previously imposed under traffic laws and regulations.

The institution stated that action is scheduled to be taken against those who drive in a zigzag manner causing fear, driving with modified vehicles and loud mufflers, speeding across speed bumps, and driving at high speeds without slowing down for speed bumps.

According to the police, action will also be taken against individuals who street race without permission from relevant authorities, stunt driving, dangerous overtaking, driving under the influence of substances, and those who fail to stop or attempt to flee when instructed to stop by the police.

The police reminded in their statement that action will be taken against both the driver and the vehicle owner when tracing recklessly driven vehicles.

Vehicles will be brought under police custody for a period of 30 days, and vehicles not claimed by the owner within the specified period will be disposed of in accordance with established procedures, it stated.

The statement also mentioned that since the Maldives Police Service has noted the involvement of employees from government institutions and companies in such acts, that information is being shared with those institutions to take available administrative measures against them.

The police stated that the identities of repeat offenders among those who drive vehicles dangerously will be made public, and legal actions will be taken after verifying the authenticity of information such as photos and videos shared by the public regarding such matters.
