Police have warned that action will be taken against foreigners wearing immodest clothing in public places.
In an announcement today, police said some foreigners living in the Maldives had been observed wearing immodest clothing on streets and in public places.
The police said such conduct is contrary to the general behavioral and ethical standards of Maldivian society and warned that necessary measures would be taken to prevent actions that could adversely affect public order.
“The service will fulfil its legal responsibility to prevent such acts and take appropriate action against such persons under Act No. 2010/11 (Prevention of Acts Violating Public Social Standards Act),” the announcement said.
Police urged people who employ or accommodate foreigners to inform them about the relevant standards and ensure they are aware of them.
Foreigners have also been urged to respect Maldivian culture and customs when walking in public places and on streets, except in areas designated for tourists.
Police said legal action would be taken against those who violate the law.
