The development of jetties on the northern side of Male' is set to begin as part of efforts to modernize the area and address congestion at the Male' North Harbour.
The Housing Ministry said in an announcement that development of the jetties near the North Harbour will begin to address difficulties faced by users of the harbour.
The ministry has therefore ordered the removal of vehicles and other items placed between the Fishermen’s Park area and Israhvehinge Naadhee Road by Friday.
Vehicles and other items not removed by the deadline will be cleared by the ministry.
The government has previously shared drawings of plans to develop Boduthakurufaanu Magu and the harbour area in northside Male'. According to the plans, a jetty will be developed at the North Harbour to accommodate speedboats.
The harbour is one of the busiest areas for boats travelling to and from various islands and resorts. Congestion and the practice of passengers boarding boats from other vessels have long been issues at the harbour.
Parts of Boduthakurufaanu Magu have already been reclaimed and expanded as part of efforts to modernize the road. The government has also decided to develop a jetty in front of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
The West Park area has been closed for the third phase of road widening and asphalting works.
The first phase of the project, which began in August last year, extended the road from the fish market south to the middle of Republic Square and widened it to four lanes. The second phase will extend the widening works from Republic Square to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal.
The section of the road up to the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) area is also being developed, while the Male' Commercial harbour is scheduled to be relocated to Thilafushi.
Once the commercial port is relocated, the section between the North Harbour and the MPL area will be the only remaining undeveloped stretch of Boduthakurufaanu Magu. Development of this section will begin following the relocation of the commercial harbour.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the Male' Commercial harbour will be relocated to Thilafushi by November 11, 2027, as part of a project aimed at providing a permanent solution to congestion at the harbour.
