Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will be passing a motion to abolish the party's President and Vice President positions in its regulations during its congress, which is set to begin tonight.
Abolishing the President and Vice President positions of the nation's largest opposition party was a suggestion shared by Fayyaz Ismail when he held the Chairperson position in the party.
MDP's general regulations state MDPs highest position is the Chairperson, and after that are the Deputy Chairperson's. They are the ones who share the responsibility of running the party.
However, issues of conflict of responsibilities due to the presence of a President and Vice President in the party came to light in the past.
While preparations are underway to abolish MDPs President and Vice President role, both positions are currently vacant. The most recent president of the party, Abdulla Shahid, vacated the post in order to run in MDPs presidential primary.
Hisaan Hussain, former Vice President of MDP, resigned from the position in order to take part in Shahid's campaign.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed held the position of MDPs President for many years. Nasheed left MDP and formed The Democrats after resigning from the position.
There are additional amendments that will be made to MDPs new general regulations, which is on the agenda to be passed on Saturday. The party has determined that the highest authority in the party will be the Chairperson.
Under the MDP’s current general regulations, if the President of the Maldives is a member of the MDP, there is no provision stating that the president will be the party’s highest authority.
