The Ministry of Housing has instructed that vehicles located on the roads from the Tsunami Monument area up to MPL be removed for the project to widen and develop Boduthakurufaanu Magu.

In an announcement issued by the Housing Ministry, it stated that road construction work from the Tsunami Monument to MPL is scheduled to commence under the project to develop Boduthakurufaanu Magu to modern standards.

The announcement said instructions had been issued to remove vehicles and other items placed along Boduthakurufaanu Magu, as well as vessels docked in the Tsunami Monument area, by the end of Saturday.

It was also stated that any vehicles remaining uncleared on the road and vessels docked in the Tsunami Monument area after that date will be removed by the ministry.

To commence the third phase of the project to widen Malé's Boduthakurufaanu Magu, lay asphalt, and develop it to modern standards, the West Park area of the road is also currently closed.

In the first phase of the project, which began in August of last year, the seawall from near the fish market southwards to about the middle of Republic Square was extended outward, and the road was widened to four lanes and paved with asphalt. In the second phase, the road was also widened from Republic Square up to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal.

As work begins to develop the road up to MPL, efforts are also underway to relocate the Malé Commercial Port to Thilafushi. The only remaining portion of Boduthakurufaanu Magu currently not developed will then be from the North Harbor to MPL. Work to develop that section has been decided to begin once the port is relocated to Thilafushi.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said the Malé Commercial Port will be relocated to Thilafushi by November 11, 2027, as part of a project aimed at providing a permanent solution to congestion at the port.
