Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed last night instructed law enforcement authorities to take the harshest possible action against repeat offenders who break traffic rules and regulations. 

The Commissioner's order comes in the wake of a recent tragic accident on Sosun Magu, Male', involving dangerous driving by a person without a valid driving license, which led to the death of a 26 year old woman. 

In a message released yesterday, the Commissioner announced that police will be enforcing special measures against persons who violate traffic laws and regulations, effective immediately. 

"The purpose of enforcing these measures is to ensure the safety and protection of all citizens, and to take the harshest possible action to prevent dangerous incidents such as this which occur due to the actions of a few," the message reads.

The Commissioner said that the directive has been issued to various police sections. 

He further stated that the stricter measures will be enforced not just in the Greater Male' Area, but across the atolls as well. 

He appealed for cooperation from the public for police efforts to enforce these stricter measures. 

The September 20 accident on Sosun Magu left three persons injured: two men and a woman. The woman died last Friday while under treatment at ADK Hospital.

The deceased, identified as Aishath Maahidha, 26, of Magumatheege, Sh. Foakaidhoo had been an Assistant Immigration Officer at Maldives Immigration. 

Following the accident, police arrested Maahu Hassan, 21, of Asseyri, Th. Dhiyamigili, who was then placed in remand in custody for 15 days. 

In court, Police revealed that Maahu had been fined on four separate occasions earlier this year for driving without a license. 

The court order also describes that the accident had been caused due to Maahu driving his motorcycle over the speed limit in a dangerous manner, driving through traffic in a zigzag weave when he crashed into the other motorcycle. Both of the individuals on the second motorcycle sustained critical brain injuries, police said in court. 

On Sunday, Police announced that they were looking for individuals seen driving dangerously in a video that emerged on social media. 

The video shows two motorcycles driving dangerously at high speeds through heavy traffic in front of the Artificial Beach.
