Asphalting work on the second segment of the ongoing repairs along Malé's Ameenee Magu has been completed, MTCC, the company undertaking the project, announced tonight.

MTCC was tasked last June with completely removing the asphalt and redoing sections of Ameenee Magu where the paved surface had risen and developed major potholes.

The area from the Voice of Maldives building up to Dharumavantha Hospital was closed for road repairs in late June.

Under that project, asphalting on segment one began on the 19th of this month. Following the completion of that work, asphalting commenced on segment two, which MTCC stated is now finished.

MTCC noted that the completion of these repairs will bring significant relief to the public regarding transportation.

Due to the ongoing road repair work, bus services through that area have also been suspended.

The project to modernize Ameenee Magu, awarded by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government to RDC, began in July 2022. The final uncompleted section of the project, carried out in phases, was finished and opened in 2024.

Because the asphalt surface had deteriorated severely in various parts of the road, certain sections had to be repaired last year as well. The work to redo the road to modern standards was initiated after the asphalt had risen in various places, posing hazards to motorists for some time.

State budget expenditures for paving Ameenee Magu with asphalt totaled MVR 84 million.
