MWSC has decided to take over the water and sewerage services of Fuvahmulah and Addu, signing a framework agreement in connection with the matter today.

The agreement was signed on behalf of Fenaka by the company's Managing Director, Mohamed Afeef Hassan. MWSC was represented by Managing Director Hussain Fahumee.

Following the signing of the agreement, Fahumee stated that MWSC will complete the work and commence water and sewerage services in Fuvahmulah and Addu before the 13th of October.

He mentioned that this is part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's decision to transition the services of certain islands currently served by Fenaka over to MWSC and STELCO.

"That process is ongoing," Fahumee stated.

Fenaka's MD, Afeef, stated that both companies are working closely together to transition the services under MWSC.

"Under this agreement, various matters such as both parties visiting the sites, inspecting the sites, conducting surveys, and so on will also be arranged," he said.

According to Afeef, he hopes that MWSC will provide an even better service than what was delivered by Fenaka.

President Muizzu announced on the 7th of this month that Fenaka Corporation, the company providing water and sewerage services, will be dissolved, and the provision of electricity services across all islands will be transferred under the oversight of STELCO.

Consequently, as STELCO takes over electricity services nationwide, survey work was recently initiated to assess the conditions of the newly acquired islands.

With the decision to dissolve Fenaka, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is currently investigating 161 cases related to the company. Following those investigations, the company was also instructed to recover MVR 21.4 million.

The Fenaka audit report also includes corruption issues committed in procuring goods and services by the corporation during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, and in one of those cases, Fenaka's then-Managing Director Ahmed Saeed was sentenced to prison.

The company currently employs over 8,000 staff members.
