State Minister for Homeland Security and Chairperson of National Drug Agency (NDA) Ahmed Siddheeq has stated that the biggest challenge faced in drug rehabilitation services is space constraints.
Siddheeq made the statement at the ceremony held to lay the foundation stone for the new Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre building in K. Himmafushi.
He expressed confidence that the completion of this building would bring a resolution to the challenges faced in drug rehabilitation services.
Siddheeq noted that the government has been taking significant measures to advance drug rehabilitation services in the country. He asserted that once the new building is developed, those in need of rehabilitation services will be provided with the most appropriate, quality care.
"Once this building is completed, the people will appreciate that this government has done much for the people. They will see that the government can do practical work and bring tangible results for the people," Siddheeq said.
"The day we all long to see is for youth to receive quality treatment here and join society as disciplined, productive members. This is a sincere hope we have. The drug issue is a pressing concern in our society. God willing, the journey we have begun today to resolve this issue will be successful."
The building in Himmafushi is being developed at a cost of USD 5 million, and will have the capacity to house 500 patients for rehabilitation. Homeland Security Ministry revealed that the project is being funded by Encore Holdings Pvt Ltd.
A large part of the building will be located on the empty site housing the current rehabilitation centre.
The ministry further said that the new building will also hold a health facility, skills development and counseling services which will be open to residents of Himmafushi as well.
The current rehabilitation centre has a capacity of treating 174 patients. However, due to the building becoming old and dilapidated, the centre is only able to treat approximately 80 patients at a time now.
