A man has been arrested after allegedly going to Gan International Airport to collect more than 3.3kg of drugs smuggled into the Maldives from India, authorities said.

Customs said the drugs were brought into the country by two passengers, Vivek Amban and Aishahmil Pali Parambath, who arrived from India on September 22.

The passengers’ luggage was searched on suspicion that they were carrying drugs, and suspected drugs were found inside, according to Customs.

The two suspects were handed over to police, who then conducted a controlled delivery operation to identify anyone who came to collect the drugs.

Police said Abdulla Ibrahim of Kumereege, Fuvahmulah, was arrested during the operation.

Ibrahim was remanded in custody for 15 days, while the other two suspects were remanded until the conclusion of their trials.

Customs said preliminary tests indicated that the seized substances were cannabis. The total weight of the suspected drugs was 3.34kg.
