Police have said today that out of the three ministries affected in the December 2024 fire, only the Environment Ministry had been insured at the time. 

At a press conference held this afternoon, Superintendent of Police Abdulla Rasheed stated that the December 12, 2024 fire incident had completely destroyed the Housing Ministry and the Construction Ministry, and caused extensive damage to the adjacent Environment Ministry and Male' City Council offices. 

He noted that responders were able to save a limited amount of materials from the Environment Ministry and the Male' City Council offices, but added that neither institution had been insured. 

"Of the three government buildings that were affected by this fire, only the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy had been insured," he said. 

Rasheed also stated that nine apartments from three houses in the vicinity, as well as a shop had sustained varying levels of damage from the scorching heat of the fire. 

While the fire broke out early in the morning, it took responders until 12:40pm to bring the fire under control, and until 3:30pm to completely extinguish it.
