Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef stated today that as President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced 33 percent of electricity being used in Maldives will be switched to renewable energy, such energy has been producing 53 megawatts (MW) of electricity in Maldives but has been increased to 126 MW.
During the media briefing held at the President's Office, the minister said the installed capacity in the generation of renewable energy was increased to 126 MW by projects across various regions. This is more than a twofold increase compared to electricity that was generated by renewable energy until 2023.
"Now the current government has increased the installed capacity of renewable energy from 53 MW to 126 MW. This was because of the projects that took place across various regions," said Shareef.
According to the minister, a total of 23 islands across Raa Atoll and Baa Atoll began using 6.5 MW solar PVs and 10 MW battery systems that were installed in said areas from July 2026. He highlighted that some islands can cut electricity for six hours and generate electricity purely from renewable energy.
The minister said that the islands that turn off their generators are R. Rasmaadhoo, R. Vaadhoo, R. Kinolhas and B. Kudarikilu.
"We got somewhat a positive vibe from this, where those islands turn off their engines for six hours, five hours. Island residents have said that they are being saved from the smoke, noise, difficulties and everything else coming from generators," Shareef said.
With the renewable energy capacity being increased to that level, the minister said it will reduce the amount of diesel being burned by 3.1 million liters per year. He said this will reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere by 8,400 tonnes.
