The Prosecutor General’s Office (PG) has said it did not appeal the acquittal of Sun Investment and Sun Construction Company in the Raa Atoll Fuggiri case because it had no legal basis to challenge the Criminal Court’s decision.

Sun Investment and Sun Construction were charged with money laundering over funds allegedly linked to the lease of Fuggiri island. Former president Abdulla Yameen is also charged with bribery and money laundering in connection with the case.

The companies, in which Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed has stakes, were acquitted by the Criminal Court in September last year.

The prosecution did not appeal the verdict to the High Court within the appeal period. The PG’s Office said there was no legal basis for an appeal that could result in the verdict being overturned.

The case was not included in the Criminal Court’s schedule of judgments, and the court has not stated why.

While the companies have been acquitted, Yameen’s trial in the Fuggiri case is still ongoing.

The prosecution has concluded presenting its case against Yameen over allegations that he accepted a USD1 million bribe and laundered the money in connection with the Fuggiri lease. The case has remained at that stage for an extended period.
