Former President Mohamed Nasheed stated today that he will cooperate with efforts being made to save the life of Sri Lankan Anojan Sivarasah, who has been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia over a social media post.

According to the Sri Lankan news outlet NewsWire Lanka, President's Counsel Faiz Musthapha and President's Counsel Upul Kumarapperuma traveled to the Maldives and met with former President Nasheed today as part of the initial diplomatic efforts to save Anojan.

Citing a statement from the Sri Lankan government, the news outlet reported that Nasheed highlighted the gravity of Sivarasah's remarks concerning the Muslim Ummah. However, he stated that he would assist in the efforts to save the young man's life out of respect for human dignity.

The Sri Lankan government has appointed Musthapha and Kumarapperuma as special diplomatic envoys to Saudi Arabia. Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath announced this in the Sri Lankan Parliament.

According to the statement delivered by Vijitha Herath in Parliament, Musthapha and Kumarapperuma are carrying out their diplomatic mission under the direct initiative of the Sri Lankan President and Foreign Minister. Rather than using government funds, they will use their own personal finances for the travels involved.

Citing Kumarapperuma, the news outlet reported that the meeting with former Maldivian President Nasheed was successful. The outlet also stated, citing Kumarapperuma, that Nasheed is preparing to undertake a trip to Saudi Arabia in the coming days.
