Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed showcased a prototype of a specially designed, traditional Maldivian attire intended for prayer imams and khatibs in the country's mosques, marking the commencement of the initiative.

Photos shared by Minister Shaheem in a Facebook post reveal an outfit and matching cap incorporating authentic Maldivian design elements.

The patterns on the attire and cap draw inspiration from mosque minarets, the intricate coral stone carvings of the historic Hukuru Miskiy (Friday Mosque), and the traditional Maldivian craftsmanship found in Thundu kunaa (woven mats). The Minister noted that this is merely the initial design phase.

"We want this to conclude based on a result produced with as many ideas as possible, and including the influence of the Maldives' history and culture," the Minister stated.

The Minister explained that the design process focuses on architectural works and elements of traditional Maldivian Islamic civilization evident throughout history. He added that the goal is to finalize this project in time for implementation by the upcoming Ramadan.

According to Shaheem, designing specialized traditional attire for imams aims to preserve Maldivian culture and history while safeguarding religious traditions from foreign customs creeping in.

Although the photos published by the Minister predominantly featured a maroon-colored outfit and cap, he clarified that these are not yet the final colors.
