Mohamed Shamin, a prominent activist of the MDP who actively participates in the party's protests, was released from police custody today.

Shamin was arrested from Velana International Airport on the 8th of this month under an order issued by the Criminal Court.

According to the warrant issued for his arrest, 41-year-old Shamin was arrested in connection with an incident during the MDP protest held on the 28th of last month, where he incited unrest, obstructed police duties, crossed the barricades placed by police to block the road at the junction of Chaandhanee Magu and Didi Goalhi, and entered the cordoned-off area.

The evidence for the case consisted of a police intelligence report, CCTV footage snapshots, and statements from officers who went to the scene.

Shamin, who works as a taxi driver, stated after his release from custody today that peaceful assembly is a right available to everyone, and being arrested while engaged in such work is unacceptable.

MDP has currently initiated a series of protests against the termination of employees from state-owned companies and the increase in the required dollar exchange rate to banks from resorts to 40 percent.

In connection with the protests, a member of the party's National Council was also arrested and had their remand period extended. Upon the expiration of that period, they were released with conditions.
