Tomorrow's hearing in the trial against former President Abdulla Yameen, concerning charges of accepting a bribe and laundering money in connection with the leasing transaction of R. Fuggiri, has been cancelled.

According to the Criminal Court, the hearing scheduled for tomorrow was cancelled at the request of the state. The court also stated that the state made the request because the prosecutors appearing in court have fallen ill.

Following the charges brought by the state against Yameen alleging that he accepted USD 1 million in bribes and laundered the money in connection with the Fuggiri leasing transaction, the stage of taking testimony has concluded, and the case is currently at the stage of making submissions regarding evidence. The case has remained at that stage for a considerable period.

A hearing for the Aarah case, in which Yameen is also prosecuted, has been scheduled for next week. In that case, after the Criminal Court had previously sentenced him to 11 years in prison, the High Court later overturned the verdict and ordered a retrial of the case.

The Supreme Court previously ruled that new evidence submitted by the state in the Aarah case could not be accepted. Furthermore, the proceedings in the Criminal Court have been put on hold until a decision is reached on the matter in the Supreme Court.
