A Malaysian company's claim against the Maldivian government to change the name of a Maldivian company as it conflicts with the Malaysian company's name has been unsuccessful.

Malaysian travel agency Sundaram Travel and Tours Sdn. Bhd filed a judicial review charge at the Civil Court. The company is seeking a name change where they want registered Maldivian company MyNZTrip Pvt Ltd to have its name changed due to the business run by the Malaysian company having the name mynztrip.com.

Even though the Malaysian company filed a request to Maldives' Ministry of Economic Development Transport & Trade for the name change, the ministry decided there is no reason for them to request it.

The ministry stated there is no company in Maldives' local business registry with a similar name and there has not been another company that has registered with the same name in Maldives previously. The ministry also said they do not acknowledge the name is being used by any other well-known company.

The Malaysian company filed a claim against the Maldivian government in the case, with the court ruling that the law states no company or business can be registered by using the name of a popular business or company from another country.

The ruling reads that there are two situations why registering such a name is not possible, with them being that it would confuse the public if a popular foreign name or popular foreign company name is used in Maldives.

With that in mind, the ruling states that if a company were to go to court, they would have to submit evidence that the public would be confused by a popular foreign business name or they would have to submit evidence that is indeed the name of a popular foreign business.

Nevertheless, the ruling reads that no such evidence was submitted. Judge Faisal Adam ruled that there is no legal basis to inform the Economic Ministry to change the name of the Maldivian company.
