Police have stated that the vehicles seen in the video circulating on social media are those that were left unclaimed by owners after towing, and meant for scrapping in Thilafushi after all legal formalities have been completed. 

Police said that the video shows the new police towyard in Hulhumale' Phase 2 where the vehicles are being readied for transport to Thilafushi for scrapping. Police confirmed that they have official authorization to scrap the vehicles seen in the footage. 

The video shows officers throwing the motorcycles from the bed of a pickup truck to the ground. This led to the public voicing outrage at how the police were handling property belonging to members of the public. 

The Land Transport Act previously provided a window within which owners must claim vehicles which are towed by police for illegal parking. If the vehicles are not claimed within this period, then police have the authority to scrap those vehicles. 

The new Land Transport Act allows for such unclaimed vehicles to be sold at auction. For this, police must hand over such vehicles to the newly established Greater Male' Transport and Mobility Office.
