The family of the 16-year-old girl who fell from a window of an Aman Udhares apartment in Hulhumale' has appealed to the public for financial assistance for her medical treatment.

While in Male' to consult a doctor, the girl fell from the third floor of an Aman Udhares tower, breaking her leg bones and sustaining serious injuries.

The family stated that the girl, who was preparing for O-Levels that started yesterday, fell on the morning of the day she was scheduled to travel back to her island after completing her medical care. Although the exact circumstances of the incident are not fully clear, it is said that the girl was severely affected psychologically.

The family alleges that the girl had become a target of bullying by a group of school peers. The family stated that on the day she fell from the building, her photos were manipulated and posted on Instagram to bully her.

A sister who spoke on behalf of the family told "Mihaaru News" that various parts of the girl's body sustained major injuries in the falling incident. She has now been taken abroad for treatment.

Following the incident, she was initially treated at IGMH. Tests conducted at that hospital showed that her spine and bones sustained serious injuries.

Citing doctors, the family stated that the bone in the L1 and L2 sections of the spine was shattered and the nerves were damaged. The family also stated that the bones connected to the hips and pelvis were cracked, and her left hip joint sustained major injuries.

The fallen girl receiving treatment: The family states that further surgeries still need to be performed.

"The bones of the left calf and various bones of the foot are broken, the skin is abraded, and there are deep wounds. The bone of the left elbow has also sustained major injuries. Such dangerous injuries require treatment under the supervision of a specialized team of doctors covering spine, orthopedics, pelvic surgery, and trauma," she said, quoting the doctors.

Due to the severity of the spinal injury and the extent to which the nerves were affected, a major surgery was performed on the first of this month. That was an operation to connect two spinal discs and remove a portion of the spinal bone.

The family stated that doctors advised that surgeries to treat the fractured bones in other parts of her body should be conducted once her condition improves further.

"However, on the fourth day after the spinal surgery, the hospital informed the family that carrying out further major surgeries in the Maldives posed a high risk. Therefore, she was brought to India to seek treatment under the supervision of a team of experts specializing in advanced trauma, spine, and hip surgeries," she said.

An Aman Udhares tower in Hulhumale: The girl sustained serious injuries after falling from the third floor.

She was taken to Ganga Hospital in Cochin, India, for treatment on the 11th of this month.

The family stated that after arriving in India, further serious issues were identified, and doctors informed them that a major infection had developed in the visible wound on her left leg bone and the infection had spread to the bone.

Citing doctors, the family stated that because tiny particles of gravel and fine sand were trapped within the damaged area, an infection had developed and approximately 20 milliliters of pus had been discharged from the area.

Another surgery has now been performed to remove the dead tissue affected by the infection.

"Doctors state that the infection is a major obstacle to the upcoming phases of treatment. Until the infection is resolved, the main leg surgery cannot proceed as previously planned. At the moment, highest priority is being given to controlling the infection and proceeding with treatment to restore damaged muscle and skin, including plastic surgery where necessary," the girl's sister explained.

Citing doctors, the sister stated that the leg bone joining surgery and other treatments can only proceed once the damaged area is completely healed and the infection is also fully resolved.

"As treatment has been further complicated due to injuries sustained to the spine, pelvic bone, arms, and legs, alongside the development of an infection at the site of the fractured leg bone, the family believes the assistance of a tertiary hospital capable of multi-disciplinary care is needed. Therefore, a request has been submitted through Aasandha for permission to transfer her to Rajagiri Hospital in Cochin," she said.

Although Aasandha has arranged coverage for treatment at her current hospital, the family stated that Aasandha has not yet been approved for her transfer to Rajagiri Hospital.

The family stated that as the duration of medical treatment has extended, their financial situation has deteriorated and they are facing difficulties.

The family stated that renting a room, dining, transportation, and purchasing medicines and tests not covered by Aasandha incur heavy expenses every day in India. However, during the time spent on treatment, a huge expenditure has been incurred and the money they had on hand has been almost depleted.

The room where the girl is receiving treatment costs 4,500 Indian Rupees (approximately MVR 725) per day to be paid. While the duration of the stay in India is not yet known, the family stated that doctors estimate it will take approximately four months.

"In this difficult and challenging time, we sincerely request the cooperation and well-wishes of all those who can assist us," the sister said.

The family stated that following the remaining surgeries, long-term physiotherapy and rehabilitation will also be required for her to walk and move about again. They requested assistance to ensure these treatments can continue without interruption.
