Former President of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) Bassam Adeel Jaleel's name has been included in the "Non Payers of Additional Tax Dues more than MVR 1,000,000" list.
The list was published yesterday by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) on their website, with Bassam, Business Image Group Pvt Ltd (BIG) and 33 other parties being included.
MIRA did not disclose how much those on the list owe the state. However, this includes an MVR 45 million fine imposed on Bassam by the Criminal Court.
BIG Pvt Ltd is owed MVR 78 million from Public Service Media (PSM) under an agreement made in 2010 between PSM and the Maldives National Broadcast Corporation (MNBC). MVR 30 million has been paid to BIG, with the High Court ordering the case be reopened afterward.
According to their regulations in publicizing the names of those who did not file their tax statements or make their payments, MIRA said they let the parties know in advance before they share their information.
The authority said under their enforcement policy in claiming tax owed to the state, they will indiscriminately take the necessary steps.
While Bassam's name was included in the "Non Payers of Additional Tax Dues more than MVR 1,000,000" list, he has been sentenced to 32 years in prison. FIFA's Independent Ethics Committee has decided to fine Bassam CHF (Swiss Franc) 1 million for the charges of misappropriating funds from FIFA to the Football Association of Maldives (FAM).
