Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has begun removing casuarina (Fithuroanu) trees in front of the Marrybrown building in Hulhumale' Phase 1, citing problems caused by their extensive roots.

The trees, planted in front of the Water's Edge building, where Marrybrown and Coffee Republic are located, provide shade and shelter. However, an HDC official told Mihaaru News that the trees’ roots have damaged the asphalt in the area.

HDC began removing the trees last Thursday.

“The casuarina tree has many long, spreading roots, which are causing various problems. We have decided to remove these trees and plant other trees in their place,” the official said.

The official said HDC also plans to develop parks along the Ocean Front area of Hulhumale' Phase 1 to create a more pleasant public space.

“The area is part of a development plan, so we need to make space for it. We will continue planting other trees in place of the trees that are being removed,” he said.

Casuarina trees are widely planted in Hulhumale', including along Fithuroanu Magu, where they provide shade and shelter. However, many have been removed over the years for various reasons, an issue that has drawn complaints from residents.
