President Abdulla Yameen Sunday submitted state-owned utilities company Fenaka Corporation's Managing Director Ahmed Shareef's name to the parliament for approval, as his nomination for the vacant post at the Elections Commission.

The discussion of his appointment has been tabled for Monday's parliament sitting which is to commence at 9 a.m. In this sitting, his nomination will be forwarded to the Committee on Independent Institution for further investigation.

Shareef had previously worked in the Elections Commission for almost a year. He was the only applicant for the post that the president had forwarded to the parliament for approval.

His first role in the government was as a State Minister at the Ministry of Education. He had also worked as a principal and served in the education field for many years. In addition to this, Shareef was previously the MP for Thimarafushi constituency.

He was appointed as the MD of Feneka Corporation in December 2016.

Shareef is being appointed to Elections Commission after the president of the commission Ahmed Sulaiman resigned from post in February. The opposition claims that Sulaiman resigned so that Shareef could take over the post at the Elections Commission, when the presidential election is scheduled to be held this year.
