The murderer of an expatriate at Thaa Guraidhoo has had the charges proven against them six years after the incident, with the Criminal Court ruling a payment of MVR 1 million in blood money (Diya).

Bangladeshi citizen Shah Salam, formerly employed as an agricultural worker, was stabbed to death in 2020. His body was discovered adjacent to the labour quarters he resided in, with multiple stab wounds. The state charged Bangladeshi citizen Babul Miah in the case.

Babul was charged with intentional homicide with a sharp object. Once the charges were proven against him, Shah's heirs were asked what they wanted, to which they said they want Diya.

The ruling where Babul was sentenced to life in prison with MVR 1 million in Diyah was heard yesterday, with atonement in the form of two months of fasting being included.

The time he has been spending in remand will be reduced from Babul's overall sentence he has to serve.

Police stated previously that Shah was attacked as a result of a physical altercation between the two.
