Speaker of Parliament and ruling People's National Congress Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla has stated that it is important to give at least two terms in office to a leader if they are to bring meaningful national development and improvement to people's standard of life.
Abdul Raheem announced that the objective of the PNC's congress that began yesterday is to secure a second presidential term for President Dr Mohamed Muizzu through re-election in 2028.
Speaking at the inauguration of PNC's congress yesterday, Abdul Raheem said that Maldives' development will come through their party. He added that the peace and stability Maldives aspires to can only be delivered through the PNC, with President Muizzu at the helm, being given a second term in power.
Abdul Raheem said that the congress only marks the beginning of the party's work towards securing a second term. He called on general members of the party to work as a united front to ensure President Muizzu achieves success in the 2028 presidential race.
The chairman spoke in praise of President Muizzu, stating that the president is determined to not allow anyone to cross 'the red line' and compromise Maldives' independence. He is working tirelessly to build a nation rooted in its authentic values and characteristics, Abdul Raheem said, asserting that the president must be granted a second term to realize this aspiration.
"Peace must be brought to the Maldives. Maldives needs to rise ahead in development and advancement. Maldivians must be granted the chance to live peaceful lives. The Maldivian people deserve security and fulfillment. This can only be achieved through giving a leader a minimum of ten years to govern," Abdul Raheem said.
As the congress concludes, each member of the PNC must go determined to work towards securing a win the 2028 presidential elections, Abdul Raheem urged.
Abdul Raheem pointed out that the Chairperson of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party, former President Mohamed Nasheed, had attended the opening ceremony of PNC's Congress, and apologized for speaking in that vein in Nasheed's presence.
"I sincerely apologize to the former President who is in attendance here. Do not take my words to heart. I extend my gratitude to you for joining us tonight, President Nasheed. However, we are a people working towards a political goal. A political party is formed for the purpose of securing power," Abdul Raheem said.
Abdul Raheem stated that the PNC always prioritizes the nation with the aim of ensuring it is Maldivians themselves who decide on the nation's affairs. PNC has no other purpose than securing a Maldives that is shaped to align with people's desires, he said.
