Former Commissioner General of Customs Yoosuf Maniu has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the office in charge of transport in the Male' region.
In the new Land Transport Act that was ratified in August, an office that will oversee traffic in Male' and Hulhumale' by the name of "Greater Male' Transport and Mobility Office" needs to be created.
Mihaaru News confirmed last week that Maniu is being appointed as a senior official of the office.
During the current government, Maniu was initially appointed as the Commissioner General of Customs. After he was dismissed from the position, he took on the role of State Minister at the Ministry of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology. He resigned from the position later on.
The office will only function for three years, with their responsibilities as follows:
- Define policies that will solve congestion and issues within the land transport system in the Male' region.
- Develop an urban plan to establish a strong system for land travel and to develop the roads.
- Determine public transport regulations.
- Determine the quota for vehicle registration in the Male' region.
- To register vehicles so that vehicles that have their registries voided does not go beyond 30 percent.
The Ministry of Economic Development, Transport & Trade will manage the Greater Male' Transport and Mobility Office.
During the ceremony to ratify the Land Transport Act at the President's Office, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated the office specifically for the Male' region will have many responsibilities and powers. He also said this decision was made with years of experience backing it.
