Former Agriculture Minister Dr Maryam Mariya has been appointed to a senior position at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mariya was appointed as Ambassador-at-Large on September 3.

Usually, the Ambassador-at-Large position is followed by an appointment as an Ambassador of Maldives to a foreign country. However, it is so far unclear if any such post is being reserved for Mariya.

Under this administration, Mariya was first appointed as Minister of higher education. In a later cabinet shift, she was transferred to the agriculture and animal welfare ministry in December 2024.

Following the government's significant loss in April's Local Council Elections, ten cabinet ministers abruptly resigned, including Mariya. The administration said at the time that this was part of plans to restructure the government to increase efficiency.

This is Mariya's first appointment to a government position following her resignation in April. Others who resigned alongside her have been similarly appointed to various state positions in the preceding months, including as Maldivian Ambassadors to foreign countries.
