Former Vilingili Constituency MP Saud Hussain has brought up how former President Abdulla Yameen framed people during his government after President Yameen questioned why Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef can freely work while he holds a political post.
During last night's People's National Front (PNF) rally, Yameen said "the Prosecutor General came out from a political nest", and so Yameen questioned how the Prosecutor General can be trusted.
"He was a State Minister previously in the President's Office. He does what Muizzu says," Yameen said.
In response to Yameen's words on an X post, Saud said that this raises the question as to whether previous presidents in recent memory can remember their actions during their presidency. He also raised the question whether Yameen speaks in such a manner because he believes the public are not of sound mind.
"It was a dark government, where the Prosecutor General was used to falsely charge him and people with different philosophies, and framed and imprisoned many political individuals. A lesson for those who think," said Saud in his X post.
While Saud responded to Yameen and even though Saud was put into prison because of various allegations during Yameen's government, none of the charges were proven against him. Saud was initially imprisoned during Yameen's government when the government had decided that Saud had lost his right to be an MP, with Saud subsequently entering the Parliament.
When the then-ruling party Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) had split in two, Saud and 11 other MPs continued to criticize the government. This led to the Elections Commission (EC) and the government referring to a ruling from the Supreme Court, taking it to mean that the MPs have lost their seats.
In addition to said case, Saud was arrested in a case where he was accused of having conspired to murder a judge.
Baarah Constituency MP Ibrahim Shujau responded to Yameen's words about the Prosecutor General on an X post as well.
He said that Maldivian scholars would be aware of the appointment procedure for Prosecutor General's and other matters during Yameen's government.
"Many educated Maldivian scholars are making fun of the former President. They clearly know what he did to the courthouse, its roof, what they did to everyone in the courthouse, the orders placed by him regarding the Parliament and its surroundings, how he wanted to appoint a Prosecutor General, the things that were done to independent institutions and what was done to news organizations," said Shujau on X.
Shujau stated that having to remind Yameen what he has done is always saddening.
