The President's Office has just stated that various agreements will be signed between Maldives and Malaysia in the week the Prime Minister of Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to come to Maldives for a state visit.
The President's Office said that PM Anwar will come to Maldives on a two-day state visit this coming Monday at the invitation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The President invited PM Anwar during his official visit to Malaysia in April 2025. The President's Office said that this will be PM Anwar's first visit to Maldives since he took office in November 2022.
The President's Office went on to say that PM Anwar will meet with President Muizzu and hold official talks during his visit. The meeting will discuss diplomatic relations between both countries, strengthening international relations and new avenues for partnership, said the President's Office.
"The two leaders will also witness the exchange of Memoranda of Understanding on select bilateral issues," said the President's Office.
The President's Office did not provide any additional details regarding the agreements.
Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla and Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam will pay courtesy calls to the Malaysian PM during his visit to Maldives, the President's Office said.
Maldives and Malaysia established diplomatic relations in 1968.
Sources state PM Anwar will be coming to Maldives after the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit held in India. BRICS is an economic association formed under Brazil, India, China and Russia's initiative.
PM Anwar's visit to Maldives will be the first time a Malaysian PM has come to Maldives in nine years. Former PM Najib Razak came to Maldives in 2017 prior to the upcoming visit.
