For the first time in the Maldives, a woman has obtained a tour guide license.

During a small ceremony held at the Tourism Ministry today, Minister Mohamed Ameen met with Aishath Sheena from Kanmatheege, S. Feydhoo, who obtained the tour guide license, handed over the license, and congratulated her on her achievement.

The primary work of tour guides is to show historical sites to tourists visiting the Maldives and provide information about those places. This can only be done by obtaining a specific permit.

One can become a tour guide by completing a course in the field. Some higher education institutions in the Maldives currently conduct short courses to train tour guides as well.

The Tourism Ministry stated that empowering women economically and technically is given special priority as an important government policy. Among them, the ministry stated that the government always works to create more opportunities for women in the tourism sector.

Although there are Maldivian tour guides, the field has been entirely dominated by men.
