Windows in Fahi Living Corporation (FDC)’s Amaan Udhares and Amaan Dhoadhi towers will be fitted with stoppers to limit how far they can open as part of measures to improve residents’ safety.
The move comes after two children fell from buildings in Hulhumale' Phase 2 last month, prompting efforts to strengthen safety measures in residential buildings.
FDC said it had begun installing window stoppers at the request of residents. The stoppers will reduce the opening of windows from 55 inches to 4 inches, according to a video released by the company.
FDC said reducing the opening would not affect ventilation.
Housing Development Corporation (HDC), which oversees Hulhumale', is also taking measures to improve safety in flats under its management.
HDC said it plans to install safety grills on balconies and windows and raise balcony railings to 1.4 metres.
Balcony railings in homes occupied by children with special needs will also be raised to 1.4 metres. Under its CSR, HDC will close balconies in homes occupied by seriously ill residents if requested.
HDC also plans to install locking and grille systems. The locking system will allow windows to open only enough to prevent children or other people from falling through them.
