Customs stated that while fines for smuggled vapes are higher than MVR 723 million, the state only received MVR 850,000.

While answering questions from Mihaaru News under the Right to Information Act, Customs said that since the date of the vape ban until the end of July 2026, 232 people have been penalized. Their total fines have reached MVR 732,520,000.00.

As per the information, the biggest fine was incurred by an individual who smuggled in 15,601 vapes, at MVR 156,060,000.00

However, Customs said that the state only received MVR 850,000 from vape fines. Sources state that cases regarding vape penalization have been filed to court as well.

As of yet, the most amount of vapes have been seized by people flying into Maldives from Malaysia.

With the amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, the import and use of vapes have been prohibited since November 2024. Those under the age of 21 cannot buy or sell tobacco products in Maldives.

If vaping equipment and other related products are smuggled into Maldives against the act, the offender will be fined MVR 50,000, with MVR 10,000 being fined for each electronic cigarette or vape that is smuggled in.
