Former President Abdulla Yameen has notified the police through a letter that he does not hold any information regarding the fire incident at the three ministries, claiming instead that it is the police who would have any such information. 

In a recent People's National Front rally, Yameen claimed that the December 12, 2024 fire at the ministries were a case of arson and that the police would be aware 'how close the perpetrator is' to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

Police subsequently attempted to deliver a summons chit to Yameen to question him over the claims. Yameen responded that he does not possess this information, and that it is instead the Maldives Police Service which would be in possession of any such information. 

Police yesterday went to Yameen's residence with a summons chit related to an ongoing investigation. 

Following this, Yameen's lawyer, Hamza Latheef, sent a letter to Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed stating that at different times yesterday, police had attempted to deliver a summons chit to Yameen. 

The letter cites the summons chit as saying Yameen is a person who can provide information to the police investigation into the fire incident at the Green Building. 

However, in his capacity as Yameen's lawyer, Hamza sent a letter to the Police Commissioner stating that Yameen does not possess any information regarding the fire incident beyond what has been shared publicly. The case is a matter being investigated by police, and hence it is the police themselves that will know how the incident came about, the letter said. 

In the letter, Hamza stated that his client, Yameen, had said in public that as the matter is under police investigation, it is the police who will know the reasons behind the incident.

It went on to say that police, too, would not consider it necessary to summon Yameen when he has nothing to contribute towards progressing the investigation.

Following Yameen's remarks at the PNF rally, Home Minister Ihusan Ali had directed the police to run a probe into Yameen's claims. 

Ihusan shared on social media that he had instructed police to investigate Yameen's claims of arson, and reiterated that regional experts had also conceded that the fire had been caused due to a spark in electrical wiring.
