Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has said that they will begin pouring asphalt onto the section of Ameenee Magu that is undergoing repairs this week.

Due to bumps and potholes on certain parts of Ameenee Magu, which has already been paved with asphalt previously, MTCC was awarded the project in June to strip the road of asphalt and repair it.

MTCC completed the required survey efforts in late June before the renovation from Izzudheen Magu in front of Voice of Maldives (Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu) until the park near Dharumavantha Hospital began.

MTCC said the layering of the Aggregate Base Course (ABC) for the project was completed last week. The company also said that asphalting efforts will begin this week.

The work to modernize Ameenee Magu was handed over to the Road Development Corporation (RDC) by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government, with the work commencing in July 2022. The project was split into phases but did not see completion when the government's term came to an end, with the final phase having been completed in early 2024 and opened to the public.

Parts of the road that had been asphalted had degraded heavily, with some parts being repaired last year. Bumps in the asphalt have posed risk to motorists along that stretch of road for some time now.

MVR 84 million from the State budget was spent on laying asphalt and redeveloping Ameenee Magu. There have been previous allegations that the work had been conducted using low quality material at inflated rates.
