The High Court has begun the trial to ascertain the validity of the death sentence placed upon Sumon Miah, the killer who was sentenced to death for the murder of Ismail Umar (Isse) at the HA. Ihavandhoo ice plant. The trial is taking place four years after Miah was sentenced.

Ismail Umar's body was discovered with multiple stab wounds inside Ihavandhoo’s ice plant, where he had worked as a mechanic and the in-charge, in June 2017. The state charged Sumon Miah, a Bangladeshi national who was employed at the plant, with homicide.

The crime was proven against Sumon and was sentenced for the homicide of Umar by the Criminal Court in March 2022. The prosecution filed a case to the High Court to ascertain the validity of the ruling in 2022, with the trial having begun today.

During today's hearing, it was requested on behalf of Sumon that arrangements for a lawyer be made on state expense. Today's hearing concluded with Sumon being given that chance.
