The government has granted a land in Hulhumale' to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to expand its efforts. 

The land plot from Hulhumale' Phase 2 has now been officially handed over to the NDMA. The land is 13,574sqft in size. 

The land will accommodate NDMA's main headquarters, an emergency operation centre, a warehouse to store disaster relief materials, and a facility to provide temporary shelter to those affected in disasters, the NDMA said. 

NDMA said that the land would assist in further strengthening disaster response efforts and increase their capacity to serve the public severalfold. 

The NDMA office was first established following the 2024 tsunami disaster. It currently operates out of offices at the Rihijehi Koshi in Male'. Prior to this, it lacked a permanent base and was run out of various schools in Male', the Social Centre, Dharubaaruge and the Civil Service Commission building.

The World Bank has also arranged funds for establishing a disaster emergency operations centre.
